WARSAW — In an effort to encourage students to think about fire safety, the Warsaw Fire Department sponsored a Fire Safety contest.

Fifth and sixth graders were challenged with the task of creating a project that would show the importance of having smoke detectors in bedrooms. Students could use any medium they chose to complete the task. Many students entered with a variety of artistic representations such as posters, models and even a decorated cake.

Judges chose the projects of students Avery Jenkins, sixth grade, and Whitney Dawson, fifth grade, as the winners of the contest at Jefferson Elementary. Avery and Whitney spent a day with firefighters. They received a tour of the stations, watched the training of new recruits, made lunch together and even went on a call with the firefighters.

When asked what a highlight of the day was, Avery responded, “The training center was my favorite part.” Both girls had a fun and interesting day with their new friends, the Warsaw firefighters.
