UPDATE: According to a press release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, a North Manchester man was seriously injured when a ditch “caved-in” in southern Kosciusko County near Silver Lake.
At 2:38 p.m., Silver Lake Fire Department and Life-Med EMS were dispatched to the 1300 block of SR 14 in Silver Lake on a report of a man buried under dirt. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene they found Dennis Ayres, 66, North Manchester, buried in dirt up to his neckline area.
According to reports, Ayres and his brother, Perry, were installing field tile when dirt walls around the ditch began to collapse. Family members quickly jumped to Ayres aid and began digging him out. Ayres was rescued from the hole and airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He sustained serious injuries to his shoulder and torso.
The Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory Tactical Recovery Unit was initially dispatched to the scene, but disregarded prior to their arrival.

INITIAL REPORT: Emergency personnel are currently responding to a report of a man trapped in dirt at 1323 SR 14, Silver Lake.
The individual has reportedly been removed from the trench. Lutheran Air was called to the scene.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Life-Med and Silver Lake Fire Department responded to the scene. Warsaw Fire Department was called to the scene but was disregarded.
